Dear Students,

We have come to the end of the semester and this is a brief note to bid you farewell. I would like to wish you the best in all your undertakings in the future. I hope you have enjoyed the reading class and the class blog. I must say that I am very happy you have learnt about blogging so quickly - I was just lucky to teach a group of intelligent bloggers in my class. Once you leave the class you can still have access to the class blog and all the material and links provided for you. You are very welcome to keep your student blogs active if you wish.

Sometimes, a biography describes a person's life from birth to death. At other times, the writer concentrates on a particular period in a person's life. We will be reading biographies of famous Australians and other people. We will practise completing a time line, making notes of key points as events, turning points, achievements.








The law affects almost everything you do and in each situations, the law is there to protect you. We will be learning about the legal system that consists of a number of institutions such as parliaments, courts and prisons. In this unit we will cover the court structure - hierarchy, juries, making laws, rights, responsibilities and protection undrer the law.

We have started the topic Health and we will cover the health system in Australia. The focus will be on Obesity as a problem all around the world. You will be exposed to different text types such as graphic texts and research reports aimed for general audience.

Task: Read the fact sheet about Obesity in Children and answer the following questions in your blogs:


  • What is obesity?

  • What are the reasons for obesity in children?

  • Is obesity only a national problem?

  • What do statistics show?

  • What is making the obesity problem worse?

  • Does obesity have an impact on children's health?

  • If yes, explain how?

  • What are the other impacts caused by obesity in children?

  • What is the treatment?

Media File - ongoing assessment






Each week you will need to collect news clippings about current issues and the most useful sources are The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian and The Daily Telegraph. Current concerns are usually, immediately covered by the press and it will mean you become familiar with some of the local and macro envoronment.

Class Activity - Take some notes using key words after reading the article which was given to you by your classmate.

Homework = Summary - Write a brief summary of the main issues the article deals with based on your notes.

Personal reflection - Respond in a written format about attitudes, feelings, reflections on the content and implications of the article.
